The 2019 Global Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics Summit kicked off on Friday in China's Silicon Valley, Shenzhen - a city in south China's Guangdong Province, gathering together many AI bigwigs to discuss the future of AI. Thousands of young engineers keen to hear and learn from the pioneering scholars attended the opening ceremony. "Although we're in the top front-tier of AI as we are working at universities, but you still can feel that it's an eye-opening experience for many audiences here," said Wu Haifeng, associate professor of Chinese University of Hong Kong Shenzhen. From virtual assistants on smartphones and in cars, to facial recognition cameras in airports and on streets, AI has become a maor part of our lives in just a few short years. The passionate developers at the summit are evidence of China's explosive AI industry growth.

If the robotics world had a celebrity it would be Spot Mini of Boston Dynamics. Last month at the Robotics Summit in Boston the mechanical dog strutted onto the floor of the Westin Hotel trailed by hundreds of flickering iPhones. Marc Raibert first unveiled his metal menaagerie almost a decade ago with a video of Big Dog. Today, Mini is the fulfillment of his mission in a sleeker, smarter, and environmentally friendlier robo-canine package than its gas-burning ancestor. Since the early 1990s, machines have relied on rechargeable lithium ion batteries for power.

The robotics market is undergoing a major transformation. Robots are growing beyond the industrial sector and beginning to assume the roles of personal assistants, surgical assistants, delivery vehicles, and autonomous vehicles, among many others. Until now, industrial robots have accounted for more than 50% of overall robotics market revenue. But 2016 marked one of the critical turning points of this shift in the robotics market, as Tractica estimates that industrial robots is set to drop to 41% of total robotics revenue, with the remaining 59% coming from non-industrial robots. Robotics is the interdisciplinary branch of engineering and science.

The Global Artificial Intelligence & Robotics Summit has opened in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. Our reporter Ge Yunfei went to China's southern technology center to find out more about the potential of the budding industry. The success of Alpha Go in defeating the human mind has aroused the world of artificial intelligence. But at the Global Artificial Intelligence & Robotics Summit in Shenzhen, it's limitations have been projected. Michael Wooldrige -- who is leading a cooperation initiative between Oxford University and Google on artificial intelligence -- said although Alpha Go is unique in its own right, it's not THAT smart.
